About us

Hoemoor Farm

Hoemoor Farm is a working dairy and beef farm. We are a small farm run by Kevin and Pauline Phillips. We run about 180 head of cattle ranging from new-borns up to 13-year-old cows. We have 60 dairy cows and keep all the calves rearing them on for beef or as replacements for the herd. Our main breed is not the traditional Friesian cows we are predominantly red and white MRIs (meusse rhine issel) and Fleckvieh. This gives us a good beef calf or replacement.

The farm is run on as near natural policy as is economically feasible, cows are fed on a grass diet with only concentrates fed in the parlour, they are housed in the cold wet winter months and go back out to grass as soon as it is dry enough to do so. The beef are reared out to grass and are normally fit for slaughter at about 24 months, going straight to the slaughter house 20 minutes away, nothing goes to market from the farm and when its time comes it is straight to the slaughter house in our own trailer so stress is kept to a minimum. Chemicals and antibiotics are kept to a minimum only using them when necessary, the welfare and comfort of our cows is very important to us. Our cows are quiet and all have names so you can come and meet them and stroke one or two.

More about

Hoemoor Farm

While staying at Hoemoor bungalow why not come and have a look around the farm we will try to show you a bit of farming life and explain why and how things are done, watch the cows get milked or the calves having their milk.

Hoemoor bungalow is situated overlooking our farm and the beautiful Otter Valley which is in an area of outstanding natural beauty. From the front of the bungalow you look over the farm across the fields and down the Otter Valley. At the back you look up over the fields where the cows will be grazing some of the time or if you are lucky enough you might get to watch a cow calve from your armchair. There are always plenty of birds or wildlife to watch from any of the windows.

You get to Hoemoor easiest from the A303 just before it joins the A30 it is reached by 2 miles of country roads which you probably won’t meet anyone on. this is ideal for cycling or walking with several footpaths nearby. You will often see foxes, deer, hares either along the roads or from the bungalow.

The nearest town to Hoemoor is Honiton – 15 mins away – a small market town well known for Honiton Lace. It has a couple of small supermarkets and a variety of small shops where you can get most things you need, several antique shops and charity shops. The best shop being the homemade ice creams from Honiton Dairys not to be missed by ice cream lovers.

The larger towns of Exeter and Taunton are less than 30 minutes away. The coasts of Sidmouth and Seaton are the closest 30 mins, but Lyme and Exmouth are not much further. These are lovely beaches for families and walking with a mixture of sand and pebbles. The north coast is about an hour’s drive, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe. More of a beach for surfing and sandcastles.

Dartmoor and Exmoor are less than an hour and there are plenty of National Trust houses within easy reach and family days out like Crealy and Cricket St. Thomas.
